The 2010 One Hour Swim

JANUARY 10 AND 31

The 20th Annual One Hour Swim was held on January 10 at Columbia University and January 31 at John Jay College. Results are now available for all heats on the results page. The event is part of the USMS One Hour Postal Championships, an annual meet held across the country. Swimmers get in the water, swim for 60 minutes without stopping, and get out. The object is to see how far one can go.

Team New York Aquatics and the Red Tide of New York use the event as an opportunity to do something more. Every year we turn it into a fundraising event, a chance to help out local organizations.

This year's event raised money for three beneficiaries. The first is the AIDS Service Center NYC, which offers a comprehensive array of services promoting the well-being, empowerment, and stability of persons living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS throughout the City and the neighboring areas. These programs include peer education, training and outreach; specialized women's services; health promotion and harm reduction initiatives; links to medical care and appropriate housing; translation assistance and child care support; HIV treatment education; supportive counseling; and much more. The second is Immigration Equality, which is the only national organization devoted to the intersection of immigration rights with the lives of LGBT and HIV-positive people. It works to end discrimination against same-sex binational couples, win asylum for LGBT people fleeing persecution, and end the HIV immigration and travel ban. The third is the Trident Swim Foundation, which provides competitive swim training, tutoring, mentoring, and college prep to inner-city children. Started in 2007 by swimmers from the Red Tide, this organization teaches three core principles: discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence. TNYA is proud to be able to help all these organizations further their missions.
